On January 28th, coaches, principles, and Athletic Directors from all over the state this week participated in a Leadership Training week in order to better serve their students. They learned different ways to teach, lead, provide support and counsel, and handle tricky situations. They were given the opportunity to test them out on the state's Student Ambassadors. About fifty students in attendance arrived on a very icy morning to the MIAA Office in Franklin at around 8 am. We were welcomed by an enthusiastic group of adults who handed us markers and poster board and told us to draw our school and what we are known for. We were given some time to complete that and then we were all brought together. We heard a speech about Heroes and an inspirational poem from Mr. Gaine.
We then met our facilitators Marty and Kevin from Minnesota. They broke us off into groups and we did ice breaker and team work exercises The groups consisted of both students and adults, talking about the same issues, coming up with different answers to the same issues. It was a good learning experience for all. After this, it was time for lunch and the Student Advisory Committee broke off from the group and had a short meeting. We were told that we would be speaking about our experiences as a Student Advisory Committee Member and to promote what we do and the Indianapolis trip for next year. The chair's and vice chair's were given certain topics to discuss and the rest of the Committee answered questions from the audience. Then, a few of us had the opportunity to speak to the MIAA's Wellness Advisory Committee. That was a very interesting experience because we were able to provide insight to adults who genuinely seemed interested in what we had to say. Student Advisory Committee member James wrote, "Today's leadership conference was run very smoothly and as always, so nice to be a part of because you are surrounded by people that have the same determination and drive for leadership. Each time I participate in one of these conferences I learn something new, whether it be getting new ideas to bring back to my school, like High Five Friday, or just bouncing around ideas to find solutions. "
